This essay reflects on globalization as a phenomenon that connects and influences the world’s socio-cultural and political spheres, similar to how some academics explore the nature of the global. In particular, the essay interrogates how globalization is mediated in the theatre. The motivation in the inquiry is based on a presumption that theatre artists are also actively participating in defining what globalization means. At the same time, it comes from an assumption that theatre artists are also actively performing what it means to be global. Many artists engage with the global by either collaborating with artists of different nationalities or using globalization as a central theme in their theatre works. In reflecting on globalization, the essay analyzes Chris Martinez’s monodrama Welcome to IntelStar, staged at the Studio Theatre of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2006. This play proposes that globalization is a trap. In this alignment of globalization and “the trap,” the entrapment brings forth a dichotomy: the global and the local. This dichotomy is strongly imagined in the staging of IntelStar, where the local is presented as the prey or the victim in the entrapment. But in the f inal analysis, the performance mediates the sociality between the local and the global and ultimately performs an entanglement of the local and the global as a reference to an attraction and repulsion to globalization. However, in such treatment of globalization, the Studio Theatre also becomes a model of the trap where artists become the hunters and the audience members, the victims.

Lumberto Mendoza. 2014. “Wittgenstein's method of language-games and the bystander effect.” Philippine Social Science Review. Abstract
The paper is a conceptual inquiry on the later Wittgenstein’s approach to ethics through an account of how the method of language-games applies to research on the bystander effect. Using the Kitty Genovese murder and the Wang Yue hit-and-run as sample cases, I cite findings on how the bystander effect involves confusion on action due to the ambiguity of the situation. I argue that the presence of this ambiguity is consistent with Wittgenstein’s view on the indeterminacy of language and that the method of language-games offers a solution via an approach of engaged reflection rather than abstract deliberation. The method of language-games deters the bystander effect by establishing a sensitivity that puts us in a better position to clarify and take the perspective of others. Emphasis on acquiring this sensitivity is significantly similar to how closeness and social learning facilitate social courage. I conclude by explaining how the method of language-games leads to a critical conception of agency that is fundamentally connected to a sense of the other and how closeness and social learning serve as concrete illustrations of how Wittgenstein’s method of language-games becomes applicable in practical ethics.

Ang clause structure ng Tagalog batay sa Cognitive Grammar
J.R. Javier. 2013. “Ang clause structure ng Tagalog batay sa Cognitive Grammar.” Department of Linguistics, UP Diliman. Publisher's Version Abstract

Babaeng Bakla: Friendships between women and gay men in the Philippines
Beatriz A Torre and Eric Julian Manalastas. 2013. “Babaeng Bakla: Friendships between women and gay men in the Philippines.” Philippine Journal of Psychology, 46, 2, Pp. 149-163. Abstract
In Philippine culture, babaeng bakla refers to women who associate with and develop close friendships with gay men and participate in gay cultural activities. This paper discusses a research investigation that examines the “babaeng bakla” phenomenon in the Philippines from the perspective of personality trait psychology. Using both imported and indigenous personality measures, we tested the hypothesis that women who are “babaeng bakla” might differ from other women along certain trait dimensions. Based on our findings, we developed a tentative model which suggests that Filipino women with certain personality characteristics form a reciprocal attraction with gay men. This leads them to develop close friendships with gay men and in turn fashion a “babaeng bakla” identity within Filipino gay culture.

Daniel D Villareal, Bernadette De F Guzman, Karl Marx DC. Jose, and Paulo Ramil Macapagal. 2013. “Delivery Van Tracking System.” AMA Computer College. Abstract
Introduction Hijacking cases especially in commercial cargoes and delivery vans has become a nuisance to industrial growth and can also be considered as an act of economic sabotage because of its detrimental effect of trade and industry. This crime continue to plague the country’s roads, more so in major cities in Philippines so it pays to be ready careful and know better ways on how to avoid this incidents. There are some issues that owners of delivery vans need to be able to handle. First is locating the specific information of the delivery vans. Since owners of large enterprise businesses are responsible for a huge number of assets, being able to locate the assets can be like finding the proverbial needle in a hay stack of data, resulting in wasted time and needless frustration. Secondly is the controlling of unauthorized use of assets. Business owners are unable to monitor all assets effectively. Misuse of company assets, such as using delivery vans outside of work hours or outside of designated areas can result in additional cost of the company. The proponents came up to tap modern technology in solving these issues and propose a system called Delivery Van Tracking System. This system aims to develop a low cost wireless tracking system utilizing both GPS and Internet technology. It provides wide accessibility to the location data collected by tracking devices while still providing updated information of the delivery van being tracked. More specifically, the World Wide Web was used as a distribution medium for the location data and a smartphone device was used to give the tracking system to report location in a wireless manner. The server application is made from PHP or Hypertext Preprocessor which is capable of creating web-based application and MySQL as the database which keeps all the data and information needed by the system. The server application sends to and receive data from android device using ISP, GPRS and 3G connections as the medium while the android device, which has a built-in GPS, receives the data and then returns information regarding its location. The proponents created an application programming interface (API) for Android device where the user can communicate to the server conveniently instead of using another computer. Significance of the study The results and findings of the study will be beneficial to the following: To the beneficiaries. The proposed system will provide an accurate tracking system which reports are updated regularly to the business owners for monitoring of their delivery vans. To future researchers. The proposed study will serve as their reference for conducting research study regarding tracking system. Statement of the problem In the past, business owners do not have a tracking system to locate their delivery vans. As a result, the possibility of misuse of delivery vans is vast. The main problem is how the business owner will monitor the delivery vans during operation. Specifically, the research will seek answers to the following questions: 1. How to locate a delivery van using smartphone devices? 2. How the business owner will be informed about the operations of the proposed system? 3. How the system will elevate the security of the delivery vans? Objectives of the study The objective of this thesis is to develop a feasible tracking system that will provide periodical information of the delivery vans to the business owners. Another objective is to analyze and give possible solutions for the following problems proponents have been identified: • Accuracy – location of delivery vans are not precise. • Reliability – chances of misuse of delivery vans are enormous. • Speed – tracking of delivery vans takes more time as it is done manually. • Security – the proposed system secures the information of both the location and the user. • User-friendly – the proposed system is easy to use Scopes and limitations of the proposed system The system will allow the business owners to locate delivery vans using smartphones. It can transmit information through network service providers. It has two- minute time interval for updated information in the server. Also, the server can receive information coming from the device using web services. The system cannot transmit and detect the current location when it is out of coverage area and when the network provider is congested and under maintenance. The device must be connected on the power supply approximately after 5-8 hours of use because GPS and 3G connection consumes more battery life. The smartphone must be Android version 2.3.6 and above. Lastly, not all establishments are included in the Google Map server. Definition of terms 3G (Third Generation). is a term used to represent the 3rd generation of mobile telecommunications technology. Android. is a Linux-based operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Application programming interface (API) is a protocol intended to be used as an interface by software components to communicate with each other. Cross-platform. refers to the ability of software to operate on more than one platform with identical (or nearly identical) functionality. General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). is a packet oriented mobile data service on the 2G and 3G cellular communication system's global system for mobile communications (GSM). Global Positioning System (GPS). is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense.
E.A. Tingatinga, B. Pacheco, and J. Hernandez. 2013. “Development of Heuristic Seismic Vulnerability Curves of Key Building Types in the Philippines.” In 10th International Conference on Urban Earthquake Engineering. Tokyo, Japan. Abstract

For the past decade, several efforts were made by different government and private institutions to develop vulnerability curves of key building types in the Philippines using empirical, heuristic, and/or computational methods. This paper presents the recent development of seismic vulnerability curves of buildings based on experts’ opinion. A building typological system in terms of structural type and materials used in construction was proposed and a paper survey was conducted where experts input for different levels of earthquake intensity the damage ratio of each building type. Analyses revealed that there is a very low correlation between number of years of experience and the confidence level of the respondents. Results also show that the heuristic vulnerability curves of low- and mid-rise buildings are similar for both concrete and steel types. Moreover, seismic vulnerability of buildings, according to specialists, is dictated by the material used in construction rather than the number of floors of a building.

Filipino LGBT psychology: Moving beyond “homosexual” street corners to advancing contemporary visions
Eric Julian Manalastas. 2013. “Filipino LGBT psychology: Moving beyond “homosexual” street corners to advancing contemporary visions.” Philippine Journal of Psychology, 46, 2, Pp. 1-3. Abstract
The earliest published references to same-sex sexualities in Philippine psychology are two descriptive field studies from more than three decades ago. One was an unobtrusive study of attitudes toward being gay using graffiti in public toilets (Sechrest & Flores, 1969). The other was an ethnographic inquiry into “male homosexual” sex work (Nery, 1979). Both papers were highly exploratory, took place in the street corners of the city of Manila, and as one author wrote, were “necessarily incomplete” (Nery, 1979, p. 32). The time has come for Filipino LGBT psychology research to move from these dark confined margins to the bright center, with rigor and rainbows in tow.
