This paper presents a method that can analyze earthquake response of typical non-structural components in a hospital. Wheel-movable, free-standing and desk-mounted equipment typically found in emergency rooms, intensive care units and operating rooms were modeled and restraints were designed to minimize or eliminate rolling, sliding and overturning. The method utilizing rigid bodies subjected to inertial forces due to earthquake was introduced and validated using simple analytical computations and numerical experiments. Examples show that non-slip mats are effective in restraining equipment that are unlikely to overturn while the 1⁄4”-diameter bungee cord with optimal orientation or pre-tensioning significantly reduces the acceleration response of the equipment. Heavy equipment, like the 175-kg medical cabinet, may be restrained using bolts or 4-mm accessory cord. This study recommends that soft materials be attached to the equipment at points of possible collision with the wall in order to prevent further damage and large displacement of the equipment.

We propose a method of forecasting customer lifetime value using the customer usage database, sampling strategy, segmentation, modeling, and validation techniques in data mining.  The highly heterogeneous customer database being mined will allow the inclusion of uncertainty components in the estimation of customer lifetime value.  A hazard function model based on a truncated lifetime data of customers can provide adequate information to compute the value of the incentive to be offered and the length of the lock up period for the customer.

The backfitting algorithm commonly used in estimating additive models is used to decompose the component shares explained by a set of predictors on a dependent variable in the presence of linear dependencies (multicollinearity) among the predictors. Simulated and actual data show that the backfitting methods are superior in terms of predictive ability as the degree of multicollinearity worsens. Furthermore, the additive smoothing splines are especially superior when the linear model yield inadequate fit to the data and the predictors exhibit extreme multicollinearity.

Cigarette smoking among lesbian, gay, and bisexual Filipino youth: Findings from a national sample
Eric Julian Manalastas. 2012. “Cigarette smoking among lesbian, gay, and bisexual Filipino youth: Findings from a national sample.” Silliman Journal, 53, 1, Pp. 71-87. Abstract
Global research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) health has shown that sexual and gender minorities have significantly higher rates of smoking than heterosexuals, using population-based surveys (Tang et al., 2004; Gruskin & Gordon, 2006; Gruskin et al., 2007) and meta-analysis (Ryan et al., 2001; Marshal et al., 2008; Lee, Griffith, & Melvin, 2009). This paper is the first to explore the prevalence of tobacco use among Filipino lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth using nationally representative data. Findings from the Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Survey (YAFS3) show that young lesbian and bisexual Filipina women had higher rates of ever-trying tobacco, had higher prevalence of current smoking, and smoked more cigarette sticks per day, compared to heterosexual women. While sexual orientation did not appear to be associated with smoking among men across three measures of tobacco use, Filipino gay and bisexual youth had the highest cigarette smoking prevalence of all four subgroups. The value of a gender x sexual orientation intersectional analysis of health risk behaviors such as cigarette smoking, as well as possible implications for tobacco use intervention, is discussed.

Gerry Lanuza. 2012. “"Hybridization, Youth Subculture and the Self-making of Senior Muslim Students in a Philippine Public High School".” Plaridel: A Philippine Journal of Communication, Media and Society, 9, 2. Abstract
Public schools are spaces for producing self-disciplined “pedagogized” bodies. But they are also a niche for students to create various subcultures that are different from the official school culture. When Muslim students enroll in public schools they are positioned within these heterogeneous spaces, yet as the present study shows, following the Foucauldian approach that ties culture to power and resistance, Muslim students are also able to create their own “techniques” of self-making that allow them to avoid the panoptic surveillance of the school while also blending, though not completely, with the mainstream culture of the students. This study, by focusing on senior Muslim students, maps out the various subcultural styles within the Makabayan school by relying exclusively on the emic categories of the students.
Intense terahertz emission from molecular beam epitaxy-grown GaAs/GaSb(100)
CP Sadia, AM Laganapan, MA Tumanguil, E Estacio, A Somintac, A Salvador, CT Que, K Yamamoto, and M Tani. 2012. “Intense terahertz emission from molecular beam epitaxy-grown GaAs/GaSb(100).” Journal of Applied Physics, 112, 123514, Pp. 1-5. http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4770267 Abstract
Intense terahertz (THz) electromagnetic wave emission was observed in undoped GaAs thin films deposited on (100) n-GaSb substrates via molecular beam epitaxy. GaAs/n-GaSb heterostructures were found to be viable THz sources having signal amplitude 75% that of bulk p-InAs. The GaAs films were grown by interruption method during the growth initiation and using various metamorphic buffer layers. Reciprocal space maps revealed that the GaAs epilayers are tensile relaxed. Defects at the i-GaAs/n-GaSb interface were confirmed by scanning electron microscope images. Band calculations were performed to infer the depletion region and electric field at the i-GaAs/n-GaSb and the air-GaAs interfaces. However, the resulting band calculations were found to be insufficient to explain the THz emission. The enhanced THz emission is currently attributed to a piezoelectric field induced by incoherent strain and defects.
