Negotiating harmony: The Hambilanons' resolve on their landscape, at The 1st International Conference on Visayan Art and Culture, Cebu City, Thursday, November 18, 2010

Space is the integration of the physical and social realms. The existence of the physical space is driven by the function assigned to it by the society. This phenomenon has been observed recently in the impending changes on Hambil, or Carabao Island, one of the islands of Romblon situated at the south of Tablas Island and north of Boracay Island. Carabao Island has attributes that can be considered "natural" to the area. The tourism department of the country has recently declared Hambil as the next Boracay, given the potential destinations. Kayod-Carabao: Response to "development" as a communal effort of the Hambilanons, at The 32nd Ugnayang Pang-Agham-Tao (UGAT) Annual Conference, National Museum, Manila, Friday, October 22, 2010

Multo in the city: Parallel remaking of the horror narrative and the locality, at The 31st Ugnayang Pang-Agham-Tao (UGAT) Annual Conference, Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City, Thursday, October 22, 2009

Horror narratives are particularly common and popular in the Philippines. They are considered to be part of the folklore tradition in the lower mythology dimension.  Narrators typically introduce creatures that are main characters of the story; examples are the kapre in the acacia tree, the nuno sa punso, and the tikbalang in the woods. However, these horror story characters seem to vanish. This is due to the apparent remaking of the environment, which also happens to be the setting of the horror story.  These types of horror stories are liked by the audience...
