About Me
Jem R. Javier is an associate professor at the Department of Linguistics, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines Diliman, where he earned his MA and PhD degrees in linguistics. He has taught graduate & undergraduate courses in linguistics, Bahasa Indonesia/Malaysia, social science, and Literacy Training Service, and conducts research primarily on Philippine linguistics & culture studies, as well as on the interface between language & cognition.
Currently, Jem is involved in the UP Monolinggwal na Diksyonaryong Filipino [UP Monolingual Dictionary of Filipino] project, based on the digital text corpus of the contemporary use of Filipino, and in a collaborative project that aims to write and update the reference grammar of Filipino, funded by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino [Commission on the Filipino Language]. He served as Chair of the UP Department of Linguistics and Editor-in-Chief of The Archive: A Journal Dedicated to the Study of Philippine Languages and Dialects, the Department's official publication. He is an affiliate of the UP CSSP Folklore Studies Program and the UP Intelligent Systems Center, and was a member of the UP CSSP Ethics Review Board.
