Education

Jem earned his MA and PhD degrees in linguistics at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman. He participated in Bahasa Malaysia training & research at the University of Malaya through the Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program (SEASREP).

Research

His essays have appeared in academic journals such as the Social Science Diliman, The Archive, Asian Theatre Journal, Jati Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, Manusya Journal of Humanities, Daluyan, and Journal of Southeast Asian Studies; and in edited collections and anthologies such as The Routledge Handbook of Asian Linguistics, Translation Studies in the Philippines: Navigating a Multilingual Archipelago (Routledge Advances in Translation and Interpreting Studies), The Legacy of Consuelo J. He has done linguistic and ethnographic fieldwork in different sites such as Kalinga, Benguet, Batangas, Bohol, Cebu, Marinduque, Ifugao, Palawan, Camarines Sur, Batanes, Iloilo, Quezon, Pampanga, Kuala Lumpur, Bulacan, Romblon, and Metro Manila.

Among the academic organizations and honor societies that he has been a member of include the The Global Council on Anthropological Linguistics, Southeast Asian Studies Association in Southeast Asia, Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society for the Social Sciences, Ugnayang Pang-Agham-Tao Anthropological Association of the Philippines, and Asian Association for Lexicography.

Extension Service

He has been part of various academic activities with the aim of dissemination research on linguistics and the social sciences in the Philippines. Some of the conferences/symposia that he (co-)convened are the Philippine Linguistics Congress (2021), Consuelo J. Paz Lectures (2019 and 2021), Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series (2019), Philippine Korean Studies Symposium (2019 and 2021), Pagpunla at Pag-ani: A National Conference to Commemorate the 70 Years of UP Diliman (2019), Sawikaan: Salita ng Taon 2018, and Pambansang Kumperensiya ng K'wentong Bayan (2017).

He served as Chair of the UP Department of Linguistics (2019-2022), Coordinator of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) Office of the Graduate Program, College Secretary of the UP CSSP, Deputy Director of the UP Diliman Information Office (2014-2018), and Member of the UP Diliman COVID-19 Task Force (2020-2021). He was an accredited announcer and member of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas through DZUP, the official radio station of UP Diliman. He co-produces Tuko Chronicles, the official podcast of the UP CSSP Folklore Studies Program.

He was awarded the UP Diliman Centennial Faculty Grant (2023), Gawad Tsanselor para sa Natatanging Mananaliksik sa Filipino (2021), One UP Faculty Grant in Linguistics for Outstanding Teaching and Research in UP Diliman (2019-2021), One UP Faculty Grant in Linguistics for Outstanding Research and Public Service in UP Diliman (2022-2024 & 2016-2018), Visiting Fellowship at the University of Shizuoka (2018), UP International Publication Award (2018, 2019, and 2023), UP Research Dissemination Grant, Gawad Sentro ng Wikang Filipino para sa Pinakamahusay na Artikulo (2013), Gawad Kolehiyo ng Agham Panlipunan at Pilosopiya, SEASREP Language Training and Research Grant (2013), and Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in the Social Sciences Student Award.
