An understudied morphosyntactic innovation, reanalysis of the Proto- Austronesian (PAn) stative intransitive prefix *ma- as a transitive affix, offers new insights into Austronesian higher-order subgrouping. Malayo- Polynesian is currently considered a primary branch of Austronesian, with no identifiably closer relationship with any linguistic subgroup in the homeland (Blust 1999, 2009/2013; Ross 2005). However, the fact that it displays the same innovative use of ma- with Amis, Siraya, Kavalan and Basay-Trobiawan and shares the merger of PAn *C/t with this group suggests that Malayo-Polynesian and East Formosan may share a common origin – the subgroup that comprises the four languages noted above. This observation points to a revised subgrouping more consistent with a socio- historical picture where the out-of-Taiwan population descended from a seafaring community expanding to the Batanes and Luzon after having developed a seafaring tradition. It also aligns with recent findings in archaeology and genetics that (i) eastern Taiwan is the most likely starting point of Austronesian dispersal (Hung 2005, 2008, 2019; Bellwood 2017; Bellwood & Dizon 2008; Carson & Hung 2018) and (ii) that the Amis bear a significantly closer relationship with Austronesian communities outside Taiwan (Capelli et al. 2001; Trejaut et al. 2005; McColl et al. 2018; Pugach et al. 2021; Tätte et al. 2021). Future investigation of additional shared innovations between Malayo-Polynesian and East Formosan could shed further light on their interrelationships.

Nominal Anchoring Functions of Porohanon Common Noun Markers
Vincent Christopher A. Santiago. 1/28/2022. “Nominal Anchoring Functions of Porohanon Common Noun Markers.” Southeast Asian Linguistics Society 8, Pp. 195-206. Online: University of Hawai'i Press. Publisher's Version Abstract

Porohanon, spoken in the Municipality of Poro, Camotes, Cebu is a member of the Central Bisayan branch of the Bisayan complex (Zorc 1977). Previous descriptions of this speech variety (Wolff 1967, Zorc 1977, Ballo 2011) have tended to classify its common noun markers into NOMINATIVE, GENITIVE, and OBLIQUE case forms. These forms are also purported to encode distinctions of DEFINITE versus INDEFINITE and SPECIFIC versus NONSPECIFIC, notions which fall under what Balogh, Latrouite, and Van Valin (2020) call “nominal anchoring”. The current study re-evaluates the functions and present-day forms of these common noun markers using written and spoken data. An alternative classification is proposed in this paper’s conclusion. The syntactic alignment of Porohanon is also reassessed considering more contemporary research on ergativity in Philippine languages.

Painting a "Continuing Modern": Exploring Practices of Abstraction within Modernity during the 1970s in the Philippines

Treading a formulated continuing modern framework, the study seeks to reanimate the discourse on abstraction in the field of painting in the country during the 1970s, by exploring its persistence through its continuous relationship with modernity—including how it is particularly conceived in postcolonial terms through the matrix of the nation. It attempts to surface other narratives on the stream of artistic practices, whose influential literature dominantly, but also necessarily, portrayed it in relation to the cooptation of the State. From this set of literature, a good number understandably dwell on the elusive concept of national identity, and frequently examine the art object or collectively through the oeuvre in the process. The study speculates on the potential of provisionally minimizing these tendencies as lenses in historicizing abstraction, and instead, invites an alternative entry point in examining it: as ‘practices’ that respond to and negotiate with the modernity of its time, with its various manifestations including the notion of nation, gleaned in the lens of geopolitics. The study considers the abstraction performed by Marciano Galang (b. 1945, d. 2001) prior the 1970s to furnish historical breadth to the framework; and those by Lao Lianben (b. 1948) and Glenn Bautista (b. 1947, d. 2014) during the focal decade of study. Writing on these practices, it doubles as an attempt to further make sense of how abstraction coexisted with the slippery concept of the contemporary, revisiting the latter’s critiques against the former, most especially abstraction’s supposed exhaustion.

Sir Anril P. Tiatco. 2022. “Philippine Catholic Festivals During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Performing Live in the “New” Normal.” Contemporary Theatre Review, 36, 3 - 4 , Pp. 296 - 304 . Publisher's Version Abstract
On 16 March 2020, then Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte imposed the Enhanced Community Quarantine putting the main island of Luzon – where Manila, the National Capital Region, is located – on a total lockdown to protect the spread of COVID-19. The lockdown restricted mobility, social gatherings were prohibited, and everyone was mandated to stay inside their homes. Moreover, there was a temporary closure of what were considered as non-essential establishments, including religious institutions. Being a predominantly Roman Catholic nation, religious rituals and festivals were heavily affected by the lockdown. Many of its ritualistic and festive performances involve human contact, which serves as the faithful’s direct and intimate relationship to the heavens. This essay interrogates how cultural festivals in the Philippines, mostly organised by the Church, adapted to the global health crisis. It reflects how the adaptations challenged and recontextualised the understanding of the live vis-à-vis the context of the digital or the virtual. Finally, a preliminary speculation on the future of the religious festivals in the Philippines is provided as a concluding reflection.
The Provenance of Selected Sets of Wardrobe in the Costumes Collections of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and GMA Network, Inc.
Elijah John F. Dar Juan. 1/10/2022. “The Provenance of Selected Sets of Wardrobe in the Costumes Collections of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and GMA Network, Inc.” Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archives Professionals , 18, 2, Pp. 162-175. Publisher's Version Abstract
Costumes play a significant role in theatrical and television practice as age, gender, socioeconomic status, occupation, and the setting and climate are shown through them. This paper will enumerate some of the productions in which the costumes are included in the collections of two organizations: the Cultural Center of the Philippines, a government arts agency for the performing arts, and GMA Network, Inc., a media conglomerate that is chiefly in the business of producing and airing television programs. Information on the production plot and setting, key players such as directors, actors, production designers, and costume designers, and general descriptions of costumes are presented in this narrative survey. This work serves as a preliminary attempt to trace the provenance of costume sets in the collection of CCP and GMA Network. It may also awaken the need to document costumes as part of institutional collections.

Semantik na Gramar ng Filipino [Semantic Grammar of Filipino]
J.R. Javier. 9/2022. “Semantik na Gramar ng Filipino [Semantic Grammar of Filipino].” Department of Linguistics, UP Diliman. Publisher's Version Abstract

-----

This study aims to describe the grammar of Filipino with particular focus on meaning, on the assumption that the meaning of the words that comprise a sentence largely contributes to their syntactic behavior and, consequently, the resultant construction of the sentence. It hopes to contribute to the general knowledge on the analysis of the grammar of a Philippine language, as well as on fields that have yet to be explored in the context of the Philippines, such as formal semantics, metaphor studies, and Filipino linguistics.

The first chapter lays the requisites of research such as statement of the problem, background and objectives of the study, scope and limitation, and methodology employed. The data set is derived and guided by the Filipino Language Corpus, a component of the ongoing collaborative research project in the University of the Philippines Diliman, that aims to describe the grammar and build a monolingual dictionary of Filipino based on the contemporary use of the language. The said corpus also informs the definition of the concept/term, “Filipino language” in this research, supplementing the definition officially provided by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino.

The second chapter states the theoretical framework used in analyzing and describing the grammar of Filipino using the semantic approach. The framework is adapted from five studies on semantics and grammar: Dixon (2005) in analyzing semantic types; Jackson (1990) in determining situation types; Malicsi (2013) in describing Filipino grammar; Conceptual Metaphor Theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980); and Javier (2013) in making assumptions on and interpreting situation types and semantic types found in Filipino.

Meanwhile, the third chapter reviews previous studies on the analysis of Filipino grammar, topics relating to Tagalog and Filipino, and theoretical assumptions that form the framework for describing and analyzing the semantic grammar of Filipino proposed in this study. Based on the review of previous works, there are several significant research gaps where the current research hopes to contribute to address. These are related to the need for: providing a complete grammar of Filipino through the lens of semantics; a more thorough categorization of Filipino roots based on both meaning and syntactic behavior; categorizing expressions in Filipino according to state, event, or action that each one describes; employing a metaphorical construct to see regularities among constructions that express location in Filipino; and a contemporary corpus-guided grammatical description of Filipino.

The fourth chapter enumerates and describes various situation types in Filipino based on event or action described by the constructions. Also included are the semantic roles of the participants in a sentence, which complete the meaning necessitated by the predicate and the semantics of the sentence in general.

The fifth and sixth chapters state the semantic types of Filipino nouns, adjectives, and verbs, the three grammatical categories on which this study focuses. The chapters also describe the grammatical features of each category and the roles that they play in the formation and interpretation of the sentence. This study pays particular attention to verbs because of its significance in the sentence, resulting in the situation type to which a construction belongs. Because of the nature of Filipino as a Philippine-type language, the description of the syntactic behavior of each semantic type and subtype is focused on the affixes that are commonly attached to the verbs, aside from the semantic roles that these verbs require.

The seventh chapter proposes that the notion of location be construed as a conceptual metaphor in the Filipino language, based on the prevalent use of the grammatical mechanisms that expresse location, particularly the affix -an and the marker sa.

The eighth chapter provides the summary and conclusion of this study. Several recommendations are also suggested for future studies to deepen the understanding of the semantic grammar of Filipino and broaden the application of this approach to other Philippine languages.

It is hoped that this semantic approach to describing Filipino grammar can serve as a model in analyzing other Philippine languages as well as provide alternative methods in teaching and learning the language as a second language, a foreign language, or a separate subject of study altogether.

Vincent Christopher A. Santiago and Emmanuel Jayson V. Bolata. 2022. “Tracing the Provenance of Marinduque Toponyms.” Social Science Diliman, 18, 2, Pp. 47-120. Publisher's Version Abstract

This paper catalogs the provincial, municipal, and barangay-level place names—or toponyms—of the island province of Marinduque. Through close readings of primary historical sources and lexicographic texts, hypotheses on the provenance of these toponyms are forwarded. They are organized based on ten toponymic categories: physical descriptions, flora, fauna, persons, local or national events, geopolitical categories, human attributes, objects, concepts, or activities based partially on the categories in Jocano (1965), Medina (1992), Lesho and Sippola (2018), and Martynenko and Chesnokova (2019). The linguistic sources for Marinduque toponyms affirm the province’s place in the Tagalogspeaking regions, but strong signals also point to contact with Bisayan and Bikol communities.

John Robert C. Rilveria. 2022. “Understanding the secondary system of therapeutic alliance in autism interventions from the perspectives of parents and caregivers.” International Journal of Child Care and Education Policy, 16, 1. Publisher's Version Abstract
This study utilized a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design in understanding the secondary system of therapeutic alliance from the perspectives of parents and caregivers of children with autism. In the quantitative phase, data from the accomplished questionnaires of 124 parent–caregiver dyads were collected and analyzed. Four factors extracted from the literature: treatment attitude, treatment compliance, level of stress, and perceived autism severity were examined as possible predictors of parent–therapist alliance, caregiver–therapist alliance, and parent–caregiver alliance. In the qualitative phase, eight parent–caregiver dyads (who both scored high in their alliance with therapist, alliance with each other, treatment attitude, treatment compliance, and level of stress) were interviewed to probe on their experiences of alliance-building, parenting, and caregiving. The integration of both quantitative and qualitative data led to the formulation of a conceptual framework that explains how the factors influence the secondary system of therapeutic alliance. These findings emphasize that tapping into the personal experiences of parents and caregivers can help in identifying what they value in a working, therapeutic relationship. Moreover, communication, skills training, and feedback among therapists, parents, and caregivers are essential to enhance positive attitude toward treatment, promote compliance to treatment recommendations, and address sources of personal stress. Nevertheless, this study calls for future studies to build into the factors associated with the systemic therapeutic alliance and to implement intervention programs that may target issues relating to attitude toward treatment, compliance to treatment, and experience of parental and caregiver stress.
Kristian Karlo Saguin. 2022. Urban Ecologies on the Edge: Making Manila's Resource Frontier. University of California Press. Publisher's Version Abstract

Laguna Lake, the largest lake in the Philippines, supplies Manila's dense urban region with fish and water while operating as a sink for its stormflows and wastes. Transforming the lake to deliver these multiple urban ecological functions, however, has generated resource conflicts and contradictions that unfold unevenly across space.

In Urban Ecologies on the Edge, Kristian Karlo Saguin tracks the politics of resource flows and unpacks the narratives of Laguna Lake as Manila's resource frontier. Provisioning the city and keeping it safe from floods are both frontier-making processes that bring together contested socioecological imaginaries, practices, and relations. Combining fieldwork and historical accounts, Saguin demonstrates how people—powerful and marginalized—interact with the state and the environment to produce the unequal landscapes of urbanization at and beyond the city's edge.
