This paper looks into how the reduplicative affix attached to borrowed terms in contemporary written Filipino is represented in the current orthography, as reflected in the corpus of published texts. The Filipino language corpus is the product of the UP Monolinggwal na Diksiyonaryong Filipino (UP MDF) project, with the aim of using the former as the basis for the compiling of the said lexicographic work. While there may be forms that can be considered as maverick, nevertheless, the result of the survey displays two distinct patterns on the reduplicative affix for borrowed terms: C1V1- for the hispanized terms, or terms borrowed from Spanish then later respelled using the “old” Filipino orthorgraphy; while C1(C2(C3))V1- is used for terms that have been recently borrowed from English. These findings are then juxtaposed with the orthographic strategies suggested/implemented by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF); and what appears to be a conflict between the rules carried out by the KWF and the forms that appear in Filipino–as it is actually used in the present–suggests a reconsideration of the Filipino orthographic system for use in pedagogy, translation, and academic discourse.
