Maria Teresa Melgar and Djorina Velasco. 2003. “Democratization in Southeast Asia: The Role of Civil Society Organizations.” In Handbook on Advocacy Strategy and Techniques Development, edited by Flor Caagusan. Quezon City: Southeast Asian Committee for Advocacy and Institute for Popular Democracy. Link to Book Abstract
There is no one set of ‘lessons’ on advocacy that needs to be learned. Because circumstances vary greatly from one country to another, what needs to be learned is a set of analytical tools (political mapping, economic policy analysis) and advocacy techniques (research, media work, coalition building, etc.). This manual provides a rough guide to these tools and techniques.
Yacob Ruru and Erniel B. Barrios. 2003. “Poisson Regression Analysis of Malaria Incidence In Jayapura.” The Philippine Statistician, 52, Pp. 27-38. Abstract
This study analyzes malaria risk factors using Poisson and Classical Regression Analysis. The distribution of the discrete dependent variable (malaria incidence) was checked to ascertain the necessity for Poisson regression. Goodness-of-fit test indicate that both the normal as well as Poisson distribution do not describe the complete data set well. Cluster Analysis revealed that the data set (132 cases) contains three distinct groups/clusters. Models were constructed per cluster using Poisson and Classical regression. Poisson regression
and classical regression are comparable based on the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). Poisson regression though is advantageous over classical regression in terms of parsimony. In count data, Poisson
regression is not troubled by the stochastic assumptions that the data should satisfy. Classical regression however, could encounter problems due to skewness, nonnegative value of the response, and nonconstant variance inherent to discrete random variables. The paper also illustrates a practical consideration in analyzing
data from a heterogeneous group.

Do Heterosexual Men Misperceive a Gay Man’s Friendliness as Sexual Interest? Evidence from Observers
Eric Julian Manalastas. 2003. “Do Heterosexual Men Misperceive a Gay Man’s Friendliness as Sexual Interest? Evidence from Observers .” Philippine Journal of Psychology, 36, 1, Pp. 1-25. Abstract
The question of whether heterosexual men, as observers, would perceive sexual interest in another male’s friendliness as a function of knowing he is gay was experimentally investigated. Thirty-six heterosexual male undergraduate students read vignettes featuring conversational interaction between two men. Sexual orientations of the characters were manipulated, and participants rated both characters on various trait terms, including an index of sexual interest. Measures of liking for characters and of attitudes toward gay men and being gay were also administered. As predicted, a gay character was rated to be more sexually interested in and to like his heterosexual co-actor, compared to when the same character was known to be heterosexual. Attitudes toward gay men and being gay predicted liking a gay character but failed to mediate the perception of sexual interest. Results are discussed in terms of social perception processes and suggestions for further investigation are presented.

University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada: Fisheries Centre Research Reports. Publisher's Version Abstract
This paper highlights two different fishers’ knowledge systems in the Philippines. These fishers’ knowledge systems underlie distinct strategies for sustaining a continued livelihood from the sea. They encompass paradigms for success in fishing and are oriented to contend with change and uncertainty. They incorporate ideas about closing or opening resources and sharing or exchanging opportunities with outsiders. What fishers seek to manage are the conditions of making a living, which include moral concerns of equity in relation to scarce opportunities. Not all resources are well known and some are highly enigmatic. Fishers’ relations with resources are linked to the current economic and social values of fish within both market and community economies.
