Research

Researches may be REDO initiated, commissioned or pursued jointly within other institutions. It may be a baseline study, policy research or an evaluative study in social development work. Research outputs are disseminated through publication, fora, roundtable discussions and symposia. These are stored in the REDo databank found in the CSWCD Library. The databank consists of research reports, training manuals, proceedings, handbooks, monographs, and videos. For the past 10 years, REDO has been involved in a number of researchers which are listed below: 

Occupational Safety Hazards (OSH) and Hazardous Work of Children in Sugarcane Farms

The study focuses on occupational safety and health (OSH) concerns of child workers in sugarcane farms. It aims to analyze the work hazards and risks they experience in the different stages of sugarcane production as basis for more child-responsive policies and programs geared towards reducing exploitative child labor conditions. Ms. Celeste F. Vallejos served as one of the Research Associate of the project. 

A Study on the Institutionalization of People’s Involvement in Disaster Management by LGUs in Two Barangays in Metro Manila.

Led by former REDO staff Dr. Leticia S. Tojos, this Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development funded research looked into the extent of local government institutionalization of people’s participation in disaster management in Barangays Santolan in Pasig and Tumana, Marikina.

STAFP and Social Protection: Recommendations for Streamlining and Expansion

Conducted by Dr. Aleli B. Bawagan, Prof. John Erwin S. Bañez of the Department of Community Development (DCD) and Ms. Catherine E. Adaro of REDO, this OVCRD Source of Solutions funded research takes a look at the Socialized Tuition and Financial Assistance Program (STFAP), one of the financial assistance of the University of the Philippines. It aims to look at the problems of leakage and under coverage in the identification of qualified students for the program in view of recommending measures to streamline the existing procedures and expand its coverage to include more deserving underprivileged students.

Study on the Outcomes of Participation of PO Leaders in Local and National Governance

It is a multidisciplinary research led by Dr. Aleli B. Bawagan with Ms. Celeste F. Vallejos of REDO, Prof. Victor G. Obedicen of DCD, Ms. Anna Angela Cayabyab, Prof. Devralin Lagos of UPLB, and Mr. Reginald S. Vallejos. The study aimed to determine the outcomes and lessons on governance drawn from the experiences of leaders from people’s organizations who had been elected or appointed in local and national level positions.

Development of Advocacy Strategies and Community Activities through Participatory Video for a Residential Subdivision Against Underground Petrochemical Seepage and Pollution

The research team conducted capacity building activities with the residents and other stakeholders in Amparo Subdivision, Caloocan City to help them deal with the problem of petrochemical seepage and pollution. Ms. Leah B. Angeles is involved in the study.

Determining the Efforts of LGUs in Popularizing the Issue of Human Trafficking among Residents of Two Barangays in Quezon City

This research was done along with the Migration cluster of CSWCD and was an attempt to help minimize the incidence of human trafficking by looking into the efforts of local officials and community leaders in disseminating information about the issue to keep the residents informed.

The Acceptance of Immigrant Care Workers in Japan

Funded by the Japan School of Social Work, the research aimed to enhance policies in enabling Filipino caregivers to meet the job requirements set by Japan.

Systems Approach to Teacher Mentoring and Urban Poor Student Achievement: Community Mobilization Component

A multidisciplinary action research involving REDO and UP College of Education, it sought to develop a community mobilization plan to help address the concerns of the low income students in Balara Elementary School and J.P. Laurel High School that hinder the students’ academic performance

Profile of Japanese-Filipino Children in Metro Manila  

A research funded by Sumitomo Foundation of Japan, it was developed to come up with a description of the current condition of children who were either abandoned or recognized by their Japanese fathers.

The Role of Participatory Video in the Empowerment and Transformation of the Marginalized Sectors of Philippine Society

This research chronicled REDO’s experience in participatory video production. It was subsequently passed to the Department of Science and Technology for their ICT4D journal last May 2007.

A Study of the Actual Functions of the Research and Extension Staff and Perceptions of and on REPS in UP Diliman

Funded by the Office of the Chancellor, it looked into the situation of REPS in UP Diliman, more particularly their role, duties, and responsibilities in their respective units. The results of the study may be used in coming up with policy or program recommendations for the sector.

The Study of the Relationship Between the Attitudes of Low Income Families Towards Older Persons in Barangay UP Campus and the Extent of Care Provided

Supported by OVCRD, it aimed to establish the relationship of the attitude of family members toward older persons to the kind of care family members provide them.

This research is funded by CHF International.
