CE 297 Finite Element Method for Structural Dynamics [MS]

January 27, 2024

CE 297 Special Topics on Finite Element Method for Structural Dynamics (Graduate-level course)
Offered: 1st Semester AY 2023-2024

This course introduced the application of the finite element method (FEM) to model the behavior of structures or components subjected to dynamic loads. The course covered the code implementation of two- and three-dimensional FEM together with eigenvalue analysis and time integration methods in a working program, which can be used in verification and validation studies of linear-elastic problems. The topics discussed included geometry discretization by triangle, quadrilateral, tetrahedron, and hexahedron elements, derivation of element matrices, explicit and implicit time integration methods, iterative solver for the derived systems of equations, postprocessing of results by visualization and graphs, and approaches to improve computational efficiency. LaTeX typesetting was studied and applied in the report writing.
