Prof. Tuting Hernandez will be presenting his paper entitled "The Front Matters: Dealing with agglutination in Philippine lexicography" at the Asian Lexicography Conference (ASIALEX 2019), which will be held at the Istanbul University Congress and Culture Center in Turkey from 19 - 21 June 2019.
Prof. Tuting Hernandez presented a talk last week entitled "BAKLAs: a life of/in resistance (so far)" as part of Vibal Group's celebration of Pride Month. During his talk, he called for the publishing industry to produce more publications that reflect the various experiences of members of the LGBTQ+ community in the Philippines.
Members of the Department met with Dr. Richard Scheerer, the grandson of Prof. Emeritus Otto Scheerer (one of the first professors of the Department of Linguistics), to talk about how to keep Prof. Scheerer’s legacy alive as we move forward on our #Roadto100. Dr. Scheerer also gave the Department digital scanned copies of his grandfather’s works and other documents. Read more about Road to 100
I was invited on Tabi-Tabi Folkloradyo, a radio program on DZUP 1902 that tackles folklore as local knowledge and as a part of everyday life. I shared some myths, legends, and stories I had encountered while doing fieldwork in different linguistic communities across the Philippines. Hosting the program was Mr. Jairus Espiritu (UP Department of Philosophy). The full recording is accessible at https://iskomunidad.upd.edu.ph/images/d/d4/TTF_MAY_27,_2019.mp3.

In line with the UP Department of Linguistics Philippine Indigenous Languages Lecture Series (PILLS) 2019, I gave a talk on the three construction types–existential, possessive, and locative– in Porohanon (ISO 639-3 prh), a Bisayan variety spoken in the Camotes islands, Cebu. These constructions have been traditionally viewed as structurally and conceptually-related to each other.

I was invited by the UP Samahang Linggwistika (UP SALIN), our Department's official student organization, to serve as guest speaker in their Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE) on current language issues in the Philippines.
