FILOMIN C. GUTIERREZ, PhD, is Professor of Sociology at the University of the Philippines Diliman where she teaches social deviance, sociology of violence, and research methods. She has published on topics of crime, delinquency, history of Philippine criminology, prison gangs, fraternities, masculinity, and violence. Her current research and publications focus on violence and the war on drugs from the perspective of arrested persons and the police.
She was a former president of the Philippine Sociological Society and the current vice president for National Associations of the International Sociological Association. The book she edited, Crime and Punishment in the Philippines: Beyond Politics and Spectacle, published in 2020 by the Philippine Social Science Council, received the 2022 Outstanding Book Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).
Her latest research article, "Overcoming and Penalizing Precarity: Narratives of Drug Personalities Arrested in the Philippine War on Drugs" is published in Critical Sociology (Online First (2022).
