Biography
Filomin Gutierrez, PhD, is Professor of sociology at the University of the Philippines Diliman where she teaches social deviance, sociology of violence, and research methods at the UPD Department of Sociology. She has published book chapters and journal articles on the topics of crime, delinquency, history of Philippine criminology, prison gangs, fraternities, masculinity, and violence. She has previously served as former president of the Philippine Sociological Society, vice-president of the Philippine Social Science Council and vice-president for national associations of the International Sociological Association (ISA). The book she edited, Crime and Punishment in the Philippines: Beyond Politics and Spectacle, published by the Philippine Social Science Council, received the 2022 Outstanding Book Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). The forthcoming book, Social Transformations and Sociology: Dispossessions and Empowerment, that she co-edited with Borut Roncevic, is slated to be published by SAGE Studies in International Sociology in February 2027. She was conferred the University of the Philippines Social Scientist II award for 2024-2026.
