The challenges of symmetrical voice languages for Universal Dependencies, at 15th International Conference of the Association for Linguistic Typology, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Wednesday, December 4, 2024

Co-authors: Maria Bardají, Angelina Aquino, and Nikolaus P. Himmelmann

Tagalog (an Austronesian language from the Philippines), as well as other Western Austronesian languages, has been analyzed as having a symmetrical voice system (Foley 1998; Himmelmann 2005; Riesberg 2014; Chen & McDonnell 2019, among others). This means that there are at least two transitive constructions called here actor voice and undergoer voice, none of which is more basic than the other. Compare the example in (1). The treatment of selected function words in monolingual Filipino dictionaries, at 16th International Conference of the Asian Association for Lexicography (ASIALEX 2023), Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea, Saturday, June 24, 2023

Abstract
We document languages in order to record the inter-related structural units and linguistic processes that make up linguistic systems, which may be analyzed and codified both for theoretical and practical applications. Grammatical descriptions of languages often shed light on the phonological, morphological and syntactic systems of languages being described. However, while it is important to provide...
