The National Academy of Science and Technology recognized the Philippine Sociological Review (PSR) Special Issue on the Sociology of Deviance as one of the recipients Outstanding Book Award for 2013.
The volume featured research articles that reflect on questions in the field of sociology of deviance, a field expertise developed by the late Professor Emeritus Ricardo M. Zarco at our Department. The article contributions problematize behavior, identities, and conditions that violate social norms, induce stigma and generate contentions for cultural and moral legitimacy in society.
The topics covered ranged from student organizations such as fraternities and their antisocial behaviors, youth identities such as being atheist or istambay (inactivity), Filipino soldiers, prison systems, inmate gangs in prison, and the portrayal of gays in Philippine cinema.
It features the academic biography of Prof. Ricardo Zarco and prints his earlier study on UP Diliman fraternities, co authored by Dr. Shoemaker. The PSR issue was edited by Prof. Filomin Candaliza-Gutierrez.
