UP Tacloban Cross-Registrants in Sociology 101 Class Bike on Diliman

When students from UP Tacloban came to cross-register in UP Diliman in the aftermath of Yolanda Typhoon in November 2013 so many enrolled in our courses that Sociology 101 had to open a new section to accommodate the large number.

Through a collaboration with the Tiklop Society of the Philippines, students in that section handled  by Prof. Gina Gatarin were issued bikes that they can use around the sprawling Diliman campus. For his piece, “Care for Our Children,” in this Philippine Daily Inquirer Column, Public Lives, Professor Emeritus Randolf S. David received the Lasallian Scholarum Award for Outstanding Published Column Article on Youth and Education.  With this year’s theme, ‘Voices that Matter,’ The Scholarum award is given by De La Salle University to individuals who raises “concerns and encourages proactive initiatives toward the development of the country’s educational system.

"Socio Barkada '75-'76" helps to resident majors from Eastern Visayas

Two resident sociology majors from Eastern Visayas whose families were affected by Typhoon Yolanda receive assistance through the generosity of our alumni. A group of alumni who call themselves, "Socio Barkada '75-'76," volunteered to extend financial assistance. The majors now each receive a grant that subsidizes their monthly living allowance in the Diliman campus  for a year. We express our gratitude to our alumni for their support to the our resident students.

TOYM Award for Sociology conferred to Nicole Curato

Nicole Curato, Sociology Department Alumna and faculty member (2012-2013, 2008-2009), received the 2013 Ten Most Outstanding Young Men TOYM Award for Sociology.

The award is organized by the Philippine Jaycees and the Gerry Roxas Foundation to recognize the country’s young men and women between ages eighteen to forty for their outstanding achievements that benefit the community and the nation significantly.
