Icaonapo %A Dar Juan, Elijah John F. %X Intellectual freedom is one known core value in the LIS profession, but there needs to be more clarity over how to define it and apply it to the actual work. In the Philippines, this concept only exists as a clause or a section of a broader guideline or policy, and a formal framework has yet to be specifically dedicated to it. This study offers insights into how intellectual freedom is perceived in Philippine academic libraries. Academic library directors (N =44) in Southern Tagalog, composed of Regions IV-A and IV-B, were asked about their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding this principle. It was found that the respondents know what intellectual freedom means and consider it highly important despite its challenges. Based on their responses, they are likely to express support for intellectual freedom but still exhibit some degree of censorship tendencies during selection. This study underscores the complexities LIS professionals face as they navigate the challenging terrain between their intellectual freedom advocacies and their roles as gatekeepers of information. %B Philippine Journal of Librarianship and Information Studies %V 43 %P 15-26 %G eng %U https://phjlis.org/index.php/phjlis/article/view/143 %N 1 %0 Book Section %B Lecture Notes in Computer Science %D 2023 %T The Design, Development, and Implementation of an LIS General Education Course for Non-LIS University Students in the Philippines %A Dar Juan, Elijah John F. %X This paper presents information on LIS 10 Information and Society, a general education course offered by the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS), University of the Philippines Diliman. LIS 10 is the first course of its kind in the Philippines. This narrative establishes the motivations that led to the course’s development and gives pertinent information, including its description, expected student outcomes, and an enumeration of course topics. It also presents qualitative feedback received from students who took the course. As the pioneering instructor of the course, the author employs the autoethnographic method to narrate his personal experience and perspective on the collective conduct of UP SLIS faculty members on the design and development of the GE course. %B Lecture Notes in Computer Science %I Springer %C iConference 2023: Information for a Better World: Normality, Virtuality, Physicality, Inclusivity %V 13971 %P 436-444 %G eng %U https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-28035-1_32 %0 Journal Article %J Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archives Professionals %D 2022 %T The Provenance of Selected Sets of Wardrobe in the Costumes Collections of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and GMA Network, Inc. %A Dar Juan, Elijah John F. %X Costumes play a significant role in theatrical and television practice as age, gender, socioeconomic status, occupation, and the setting and climate are shown through them. This paper will enumerate some of the productions in which the costumes are included in the collections of two organizations: the Cultural Center of the Philippines, a government arts agency for the performing arts, and GMA Network, Inc., a media conglomerate that is chiefly in the business of producing and airing television programs. Information on the production plot and setting, key players such as directors, actors, production designers, and costume designers, and general descriptions of costumes are presented in this narrative survey. This work serves as a preliminary attempt to trace the provenance of costume sets in the collection of CCP and GMA Network. It may also awaken the need to document costumes as part of institutional collections. %B Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archives Professionals %V 18 %P 162-175 %G eng %U http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/15501906211072914 %N 2 %0 Conference Paper %B A-LIEP2021: The 10th Asia-Pacific Library and Information Education and Practice (A-LIEP) Conference %D 2021 %T Responding to Challenges, Transforming LIS Pedagogy: The Case of the School of Library and Information Studies, University of the Philippines %A Golfo-Barcelona, Mary Grace P. %A Dar Juan, Elijah John F. %X Background. The Philippine educational system, including LIS education, was adversely affected by the current pandemic that the whole world is experiencing. Objectives. This paper discusses the unique challenges that UP SLIS has encountered in its transition from blended learning to a fully remote learning environment. It also presents strategies SLIS has adopted to overcome these challenges and ensure the quality of LIS education that it has committed to delivering to its stakeholders. Methods. The UP SLIS as an LIS educational institution is examined as a case study. Insights and perspectives from the Dean as the administrator of the School and an SLIS faculty member are analyzed and presented. Results. There are prevailing challenges in LIS education in the context of the elements of the teaching and learning process and external influences to LIS educators and students that further complicate the challenges that they have to overcome since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the familiarity of LIS educators and students with the use of technology and online platforms in the delivery of courses, as well as the awareness of alternative resources within the purview of limited resources, helped with the adjustment to the sudden transformation from traditional to a remote learning/teaching modality. Contributions. Learnings may be generated from the exposition of experiences and the actions taken by UP SLIS in coping with the challenges brought about by the pandemic. Likewise, the presentation of the authors’ actual experiences as LIS educators serves as documentation of the efforts in managing an LIS school and addressing the extraordinary challenges in such a critical period. %B A-LIEP2021: The 10th Asia-Pacific Library and Information Education and Practice (A-LIEP) Conference %C (Online) %G eng %0 Thesis %B School of Library and Information Studies %D 2021 %T The Design, Development, and Implementation of a General Education Course in Library and Information Science at the University of the Philippines Diliman %A Dar Juan, Elijah John F. %X The study looked into how the University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies (UP SLIS), its faculty members, and the researcher executed their respective agencies in designing, developing, and implementing LIS 10 Information and Society as a general education (GE) course in UP Diliman. It utilized the structure-agency framework to examine the limitations set by structures the manner by which the agents exercised their agencies subject to such limits. The study is qualitative, with autoethnography as the primary method of inquiry. The researcher created a narrative to uncover knowledge and insight to answer the research questions. Related activities include analysis of documents, recollection of personal experiences, and documentation of perspectives and pertinent events. The study revealed that UP SLIS, in an exercise of its agency as an academic degree-granting unit, along with its various attributes and traits, took the opportunity to propose a GE course. The UP SLIS Faculty exercised its agency by unifying efforts to design a GE course on information issues. The faculty in charge of implementing the course was pivotal in successfully achieving the course outcomes and improving the overall image of the LIS 10 and UP SLIS. With the 2017 UP System GE Framework and the UP Diliman GE requirements as structures, all agents effectively exercised their agencies to ensure that the course satisfied the University policies and contributed to educating intellectually and morally able citizens that are responsible in their information engagements. %B School of Library and Information Studies %G eng %9 Master's thesis %0 Book Section %B The Vargas Collection: Art and Filipiniana %D 2020 %T The Vargas Museum Library and Archives: Reflecting the Life and Times of Jorge B. Libraries are sometimes the least priority of a public school, a state university, a local government unit or an enterprise. With the efforts of its administrators and help of the innovative librarians, these libraries could solicit book donations and other information products, collaterals, library equipment and furniture if they have the right contact person – the CSR managers from the generous donors. More often than not, these libraries try to squeeze in the meager funds they get from their institutions and try to work it out based from their day-to-day needs.

This paper presents 14 organizations / corporations that are active in responding to the needs of their beneficiaries. Each organization / corporation has outlined their CSR mission in changing the lives of their “customers” by giving back what they have earned.

This paper shares the CSR initiatives of Philippine corporations and non-government organizations in uplifting the reading habits and shaping the knowledge culture of the Philippines by involving and cultivating library programs and extension services to the greater public.

Its numerous features allow library managers to publicize and market services, share content, and interact with library users. The University Library of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD Library), through the General Reference Section of the Main Library, provides marketing and reference service through its Facebook page by uploading photos and promotional materials on the site to disseminate information on library resources and services. The social networking site facilitates reference queries via messages sent to the page and via wall posts and comments, with the majority of queries related to library schedules and access policies. Facebook has also been useful in establishing connection and association with library users by soliciting and accepting feedback. Likes, comments and shares are the indicators of how users react to the activities of UPD Library at Facebook. Challenges encountered are non-engagement, negative feedback, problematic promotion practices, environment changes and the difficulty of achieving market saturation. Libraries are recommended to offer specific reference services such as answering queries, providing current awareness and conducting readers’ advisory through Facebook. It is recommended to promote information literacy activities and market library collections, services and events through advertisements, albums, status updates and event photos. Interaction, collaboration and feedback may also be done in the social networking site. %B PLAI Journal %V 1 %P 14-25 %G eng %N 1
