BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

Christian R. Orozco is an Assistant Professor and Head of the Environmental and Energy Engineering Group of the Institute of Civil Engineering at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He was the founding Director of the Office of Field Activities Diliman, Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He obtained his BSc in Civil Engineering cum laude and MSc in Environmental Engineering degrees from the same university. He is a licensed civil engineer in the Philippines and holds certification from the American Concrete Institute. He is a member of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers and is a US International Exchange Alumni. He is currently the Vice President of American Concrete Institute Philippines Chapter and first certified examiner for concrete field testing and two other ACI certifications in the Philippines by the American Concrete Institute in the United States.

 

Christian is a World Bank trained trainer for environmental and social safeguards. Among his other international trainings include sustainable environment and energy in the National Tsing Hua University Taiwan, disaster risk management in Tohoku University, Japan,  solid waste management and landfill design in the University of Malaya, Malaysia, seismic design of structures by the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Taipei Taiwan and water treatment processes and plants in UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, The Netherlands. He was also trained as a trainer for Integrated Water Resource Management Tools by UNESCO-IHE and Deltares.

 

As an educator, researcher, engineer and a passionate environmental advocate, Christian’s ultimate goal is to make an influence in the society through high impact researches. In recognition of this advocacy and dedication, Christian was selected by the US Embassy in Manila to be a leader-mentor in the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative Generation Earth Workshop 2015 in Cambodia to mentor a group of young ASEAN leaders in solving a regional environmental issue. He has been involved in several government and industry-funded research projects related to land use planning, environmental impact assessment, water quality monitoring/modeling, structural integrity assessment of reinforced concrete buildings, road applications of cement, sustainable construction materials and solid waste management, among others. In 2015, his expertise in wastewater management is tapped by the UP System by appointing him as one of the members of the team of experts that designed the masterplan of the new UP Tacloban in Sta. Elena. In 2016, he was involved as technical consultant in the Rate Rebasing Exercise of Boracay Water Island Company which reviews past and future projects related to water and wastewater treatment. In 2018, he is the project leader of the OVCRD-funded project “Proposed Water Conservation and Efficiency Measures in UP Diliman”. , He was involved as a materials expert for the World Bank Project on the Proposed Revision of the National Building Code of the Philippines.


He is currently involved on the project “Policy Dialogue and Network Building of Multi-Stakeholders on Integrated Domestic Wastewater Management in ASEAN Countries” with other members from other national government agencies such as NWRB, MWSS, DENR, NEDA. He is also part of the CHED PCARI-funded research project with University of California Berkeley entitled “Philippine Electro-Chemical Arsenic Remediation (ECAR): Implementation of a Novel Technology to Affordably and Effectively Remove Arsenic from Contaminated Philippine Groundwaters.” In this project, he has been actively involved in the design of a drinking water treatment system that is capable of removing arsenic through electro-coagulation which will be piloted in an arsenic contaminated site in the Philippines.

Aside from this, Christian has been a recipient of various awards and grants, both local and international. In 2019, his team won first place in the American Concrete Institute competition for developing an eco-friendly concrete In 2015 and 2017, he was a JICA visiting foreign researcher in Toyohashi University of Technology and Hokkaido University in Japan, respectively. Aside from this, he has attended trainings and presented in various academic and professional conferences in Taiwan, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Japan, Turkey, South Korea, The Netherlands, Canada and the United States.
