Abstract

Ito ang: From the Editors: Migrant Communities and Emerging Australian Literature (2007), Salu-Salo: In Conversation with Filipinos (2008), at Migrations and Mediations: The Emergence of Southeast Asian Writers in Australia, 1972-2007 (2016).

Title (English)

Two Anthologies, One Literary History: A Postscript on Three Books About Filipino Writers in Australia

Abstract (English)

My research on the narratives of migration of Filipino writers in Australia produced two anthologies and a book of literary history. These are: From the Editors: Migrant Communities and Emerging Australian Literature (2007), Salu-Salo: In Conversation with Filipinos (2008), and Migrations and Mediations: The Emergence of Southeast Asian Writers in Australia, 1972-2007 (2016). Several diasporic writers from the Philippines emerged in Australia from 1972 onwards because they received encouragement from literary mentors, creative writing programs, small printing presses, university presses, literary awards, grants and fellowships, and community-based initiatives. Hopefully, my three books provided a modest contribution to the growing body of works on Asians and non-Anglo-Celtic and non-European communities in Australia. Just as more diasporic writers render judgment about the acceptance or rejection of their “Australianness,” it is hoped that more scholars will further explore the development of creative productions that often deal with themes and realities surrounding Southeast Asians in Australia. At the same time, this researcher nurtures the possibility of scholars formulating a more definitive theory about writers from minority ethnic communities in Anglo-Celtic and European-centered cultures in the future.
